PiMS Printing Process

Print Manager Overview

PiMS uses the features of Crystal Reports and Jasper Reports to format print output. After the page(s) have been formatted, PiMS uses three profiles to route the page to the correct destination. Please refer to the Setting Up Printers page for more information on setting up printers. To add new letters and prints, please refer to the Adding New Letters and Prints page.

Printer Routing Profile

The Printer Routing profile is used to identify the printer ID for notices, letters, reports, and other printouts. The routing profile also allows you to setup multiple print IDs so that the printout prints in multiple locations simultaneously or at different days/times of day.

The routing profile contains entries for standard PiMS print outs such as ACCTHIS2-Print Account History and FACEREGS - Print Patient Sheet as well as collection letters.

Print Destination Profile

The printer destination profile links the PiMS printer ID to the actual Windows print queue. It also allows you to override the printer queue based on the workstation. For example, if you have two different billing offices, you can route claims to different printers based on where the workstation is located.

Device Profile

The device table is used by Order Communications to print a single document in multiple locations.

Print Management Log

PiMS maintains a print management log, PRINTMGR.LOG in the \pdmpims\log. Every print request in PiMS is logged. Every print initiation shows the name of the report, printer ID, printer queue, port, share name, computer name and a message that the print was successful or failed and if the print was rerouted using PiMS Thin Client.
